Chateau Marcus on the Move!

IMG_9741

As you might know from my other site on WordPress loose space, beginning of 2018 I undertook a three months residency at x-church in Gainsborough and out of this came not only a body of work but also Chateau Marcus, the Tardis like showing space currently situated in the main hall of x-church. Besides having no budget to speak of, it has nevertheless ambition and strives to be host to the local creatives. Since its opening in March 2018 it has been used more or less continuously and I am sure that this little place has lots of stories to tell. Now for the first time Chateau Marcus will move and pop up in Lincoln.

As it happens, I will present the outcome of the residency at Project Space Plus at Lincoln University from 28th January to 4th February and thanks to the kind help of Marcus Hammond, artistic director of x-church, I am able to host Chateau Marcus as part of my show. As an exhibition space within the exhibition it  will show a series of works by Joana Cifre Cerdà, Clive Maclennan, Kev Snell, Gabrielė Minkevičiūtė. Exact details on what they will show to follow. Watch this space!

Judith Stewart: My Family Others

DSC_0163

Residency: 12.00 14th July – 12.00 15th July 2018

As part of the x24 festival at x-church Judith Stewart will take up a 24 hour residency at Chateau Marcus. Her intention is to undertake interviews about what family means today, about how the outdated nuclear family model has been given new life by extending it with others.

Judith Stewart in her own words:  One of the defining characteristics of family is that of responsibility towards those who we regard as part of our clan. As we voluntarily absorb other beings into our households, these responsibilities become complicated and the concept of ‘family’ expands in ways that current social structures fail to acknowledge.

Judith Stewart is a highly regarded visual artist, filmmaker and curator. She has a PhD in Fine Arts (MMU) and is currently an associate lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Clive Maclennan: A year to remember … or maybe not

Opening: 19.00 – 22. 00 on Friday 20th April 2018

Exhibition: 20th – 28th April. Viewing on request.

It's a cover up.

Clive Maclennan is an exceptional photographer and photojournalist who has lived on and off in Gainsborough since he was eight. By documenting  how his home town has evolved he has established a photographic record that is truly extraordinary. For this exhibition  he chose a set of images that though based in Gainsborough are not documentary in their nature. They are deeply personal and reflect on a particularly difficult period in his life.

Clive with his own words: A year to remember … or maybe not, I found myself trying to express my feelings of loss, anger and frustrations through some of my darker pictures along with accompanying words and titles that had or could be read with double meanings and was surprised how many other people also related to some of those pictures and words.

Joana Cifre Cerdà: I want you to feel the weight of my loss…. or is it the weight of my freedom?

Performance: between 19.00 – 22.00 on Friday, 16th March 2018

Exhibition: 17th to 24th March. Viewing on request.

2 - 1 (18)

This is the inaugural yet low key event of Chateau Marcus.

Joana Cifre Cerdà is a multidisciplinary artist. She is very interested in performance and has performed widely both in the UK and in Spain. Based in Lincolnshire since 1994, she has recently finished an MA Art by Research at University of Lincoln.

Joana describes what she will explore in this performance with the following words:

I want you to feel the weight of my loss…. or is it the weight of my freedom?  This is a performance in which, through the making of sculptures that weigh exactly the same as the uterus I had removed nine weeks ago, I share my confusion, my fear, my relief, my astonishment. What will happen now? Will I still be the same? Will I feel the same? Will I be more tame now that my hyster is gone?
